Campbelltown Painters for Heritage Streets and Family Homes

Minimalist illustration representing interior painting.

Painting in Campbelltown, from Queen Street to the new Airds streets

Campbelltown has two very different faces. Queen Street keeps a row of buildings from the late 1840s, while suburbs such as Airds are being rebuilt with new homes. In between are decades of brick-veneer family houses, townhouses and units. WM Painting & Decorating is licensed and insured, with over 10 years of painting and decorating experience, and we match the paint system to the building rather than the postcode.

This page covers how we approach Campbelltown’s heritage buildings, older housing, summer sun and ongoing redevelopment. To arrange a visit, call 0434 432 267 or use the contact page.

Four 1840s town houses on Queen Street

Campbelltown Council’s own conservation area sheet for Queen Street covers four buildings at 284, 288, 292 and 298 Queen Street, built in the late 1840s as part of the Bradbury Park subdivision. McGuanne House was put up by a doctor, George Fullerton. The Old Railway Hotel began life as Doyle’s Hotel. William Bursill’s shop grew from a small two-storey stone building, and the Coaching House kept its verandah with turned columns and cast-iron Ionic capitals.

The same sheet says the group was neglected and vandalised for years before being restored, with works completed in 1964 and the hotel restored in 1971. It also notes that part of Bursill’s old shop sign, very faded, was uncovered during restoration. For a painter that detail matters. Old signwriting, lime-based finishes and softer masonry all tell you to stop and look before you strip or seal anything. If a building like this is on your list, we start with a patch test, keep the paint breathable and keep any original markings visible wherever the owner and Council agree.

If your building is on or near the heritage list

Not every Campbelltown home is listed, but the old town centre and a handful of homesteads are. Before repainting anything that might be a heritage item or sit in a conservation area, check with Campbelltown City Council so a new colour scheme does not need to be undone. We can help with the practical side: written paint names and brands, photos of the existing scheme and notes about what we will repair first.

For listed buildings we avoid heavy sealing coatings over old brick and render, keep timber repairs like-for-like where we can, and choose tones from the building’s period rather than the latest catalogue. Our colour consultation is a useful first step because it puts samples on the actual wall. If you are not sure whether your address is covered, we would rather you ask Council before we begin than find out afterwards.

A fast-growing city, and homes of every decade

From the 1960s Campbelltown expanded quickly, and the housing reflects it. Older streets are full of single-storey brick-veneer homes with tiled roofs, aluminium windows and simple timber fascias. Later estates brought two-storey homes with rendered facades, townhouse complexes and units close to the station and the hospital.

Each era fails in its own way. In the older homes we usually find chalking paint on fascias and eaves, peeling on south-facing timber and tired ceilings from a leaking roof or a bathroom fan that never vented properly. In newer rendered homes the issues are hairline cracks, builder-grade paint that has faded and mildew in shaded corners. We inspect the particular house before pricing and explain what we will fix, what we will repaint and what we recommend leaving alone. That keeps the quote honest and the job matched to the building.

Rebuilding Airds: new homes, first repaints

The NSW Government’s Airds Bradbury renewal project plans around 2,100 new homes on a 62-hectare site, with up to 30% set aside for social housing and about 38 hectares of surrounding bushland to be regenerated. The page lists completion for 2030 and notes $75 million allocated in the 2020-21 budget to fast-track the project.

Large renewal areas mix new and older homes, and the paint questions change by age. Owners of brand-new houses often want help with touch-ups, feature walls and fixing builders’ marks. Owners of older homes nearby may want exterior work to keep up with a changing street. Landlords and investors tend to want a repaint between tenants that is quick, tidy and priced upfront. We can schedule vacant-property repaints at short notice where our diary allows and work to a written scope so everyone knows what is included.

Heat, UV and painting in western Sydney summers

Campbelltown sits inland, away from the sea breeze, and summer afternoons are hot. That affects paint in two ways. First, sun exposure fades and chalks exterior coatings, especially on west and north walls. Second, painting a hot surface can blister or dry too quickly. Paint labels give surface temperature and application limits, and we plan around them rather than pushing on regardless.

In practice that means exterior work starts early, shifts to shaded walls as the sun swings round and avoids the middle of a very hot afternoon. Dark colours soak up heat and can show their weakness on thin or aged substrates, so we discuss lighter or heat-reflective options for west-facing walls and roofs. Roof coatings need a clean, dry, sound surface, so we repair cracked tiles and rusted sheets before applying anything. Eaves, fascias and gutters take the worst UV, and we use primers that are made for exterior timber rather than relying on a quick topcoat.

Shopfronts, medical rooms and offices in the city centre

Campbelltown has a busy centre with shops, offices and medical rooms, and those premises cannot lose a day of trade for paint. We plan commercial jobs in stages, working from the back of the building to the front, or from one suite to the next, so there is always a clear path for customers and staff. Waiting rooms and treatment rooms usually need low-odour products and a washable finish.

Exterior commercial walls take traffic grime and sun, and graffiti is a fact of life on some lanes and rear walls. We prime and seal those surfaces so that marks can be cleaned or painted out without leaving ghosts. If your premises sit in the heritage streetscape, we follow the same approach as for the Queen Street buildings and check with Council before changing colours. Our commercial painting page has more about how we schedule these jobs and what you can expect on the day.

Lead, older ceilings and what we do first

Homes built before 1970 may contain lead in their older paint layers. NSW LeadSmart recommends leaving sound lead paint undisturbed, wet scraping or wet sanding when it must be removed, avoiding heat guns and keeping children and pregnant or breastfeeding women away from the work area. Our process matches that advice: wet methods, contained dust, wide drop sheets and careful waste disposal.

For rooms with water stains we find the source before painting. A stained ceiling coated with a stain blocker looks fine for a few months and then shows the ring again if the roof still leaks. We treat mould in bathrooms and laundries first, then prime and finish with a bathroom-grade paint. Neighbouring suburbs share many of these issues, which is why we also work in Ingleburn, Mt Annan, Narellan and Leppington. Common questions from Campbelltown customers

Can you paint a building on Queen Street?

We can paint heritage buildings, but check with Council first about listings and colour schemes. We use breathable products on old masonry and test a patch before committing.

Do you repaint investment properties between tenants?

Yes. We work to a written scope and price, and can often schedule vacant repaints at short notice depending on our diary.

Is it too hot to paint the outside of my house in summer?

Not if the work is planned properly. We start early, follow the surface temperature limits on the paint label and move to shaded walls as the day heats up.

Why did the paint on my fascias peel so quickly?

Usually it is UV, moisture getting behind old paint or a primer that was never right for exterior timber. We scrape back, prime properly and recoat.

Do you paint new-build homes in estates like Airds?

Yes. Typical jobs include touch-ups, feature walls, fixing builders’ marks and exterior colour changes.
