Exeter Painters for Village Cottages and Country Acreage

Minimalist illustration representing interior painting.

Painting in Exeter, a village small enough to know its landmarks by name

Exeter is a small village on the Main Southern railway line, and its landmarks are few and well known: a heritage-listed station, a stone church and the cottages and country properties around them. The Southern Highlands visitor guide describes a village with a strong English character, a country station and a historic stone church set in park-like grounds. For a painter, that means timber and stone, side by side. WM Painting & Decorating is licensed and insured, with over 10 years of painting and decorating experience, and we price Exeter work for the building in front of us rather than the postcode.

This page looks at the station and church, stone and weatherboard, the January 2020 fire, acreage and older paint. To book a visit, call 0434 432 267 or use the contact page.

Reading a heritage railway station for painting clues

The State Heritage Inventory record for the Exeter Railway Station group lists two timber station buildings from 1891, a timber waiting shed on the second platform, a later timber building from 1915, a two-storey gabled signal box from about 1897 and a corrugated iron lamp room, with brick platform faces. It describes the signal box as a rare on-station two-level example and the planting as some of the best of any small country station. The group is on the State Heritage Register and the record calls it one of the best small station complexes in the State.

The station is not ours to paint, because it belongs to the rail owner. It still shows what old timber in Exeter needs: regular paint and plants kept off the walls. Weatherboards that stay shaded and damp lose paint quickly, so we check what is touching a wall before we pick a coating.

Basalt, sandstone and the village church

According to the church history catalogue entry for St Aidan’s Anglican Church, Exeter’s Anglican services were held at a family home in 1893, and the church opened for worship in July 1895 and was dedicated in January 1896. Its walls are mostly rough-trimmed local basalt, with arches and the door and window surrounds in sandstone from Bundanoon. The entry names the Badgerys, Yarwoods and Yates among the families who supported its construction.

Stone like that is a lesson in what not to paint. On Exeter houses with basalt or sandstone foundations, chimneys and verandah bases, we leave the masonry as it is and cut a neat line against the weatherboard or rendered wall above. Paint on porous stone traps moisture and flakes away within a few years. We also keep wash water and paint off stonework, because staining on basalt or sandstone is hard to remove later.

Weatherboards, fibro and the cottages around the station

Exeter’s houses vary in age and material. Older cottages tend to be weatherboard with iron roofs, while later houses are brick or fibro. Each one needs a different preparation. On weatherboard we scrape back loose paint, sand edges, treat bare timber and prime before topcoats. Gaps where boards meet are filled with a flexible product so the paint film does not crack as the timber moves.

On fibro, a house built before the 1980s may contain asbestos, which must not be sanded dry. We wash it, check for damage and use appropriate methods. On brick, we look for failed mortar and efflorescence before applying paint. We tell you what we find and what it will mean for the price.

January 2020: the Morton Fire and Exeter

The Bundanoon History Group’s account of the Morton Fire says the fire formed on 4 January 2020 after embers from the Currowan fire jumped the Shoalhaven River, and southerly winds of up to 90 km/h pushed it towards Bundanoon, Wingello and Exeter. The group records two homes lost in Exeter on 4 and 5 January, and 23,004 hectares of Morton National Park burned. The fire was declared out on 10 February 2020.

Painting does not change your bushfire risk, and we will not say it does. What a repaint can do is expose the faults that matter when you prepare a property. The NSW Rural Fire Service’s prepare your property guidance includes sealing gaps around doors and windows, repairing gaps in external walls, clearing gutters and trimming overhanging trees. When we repaint, we find rotten boards, open joints and failed seals, and we tell you about them. If smoke or soot affected your house, say so; stain-blocking primer is needed before topcoats.

Painting on an acreage

Many Exeter properties are bigger than a suburban lot. A typical job might include a house, a shed, a garage, a long timber fence and a gate. These add up, so we measure everything on the first visit and quote each part separately. That way you can decide whether to do the house now and the fence next year.

Bigger blocks also mean more exposure. Rain-washed gutters, trees that drop leaves, sun on north walls and wind on exposed corners all affect where a paint system fails first. We look at which wall is worst and start the repair work there. Gates, post tops and the bottoms of fence posts are the next weak points, because water sits on end grain. Priming and sealing those details adds little cost and lengthens the life of the job.

Sheds, tanks and iron roofs

Country properties usually carry corrugated iron: on the house, over the shed, around the stock yards. Old iron rusts first at laps, screw heads and the lower edge of sheets. We wash it, remove loose rust, replace failed fixings and seal laps before applying a coating system made for metal. Colour matters on larger roofs. A pale colour reflects heat and keeps a shed cooler, while a dark colour can look good against bush but runs hotter in the sun.

Our roof painting and spraying page explains the process. If a roof is too far gone for coating, we say so rather than putting a coat of paint on a sheet that needs replacing.

Inside an older Exeter house

Interior work in a village house often starts with the unseen: damp from a leaking gutter, a stained ceiling from an old roof leak or a cracked cornice. We find the cause before we paint, because the same stain will return through new paint if the leak is not fixed. After repairs, we prime stains, fill cracks and finish with a paint that suits the room, such as a washable finish for kitchens and hallways. Our interior painting page lists the steps.

A colour consultation is worth booking for a house with small windows and trees outside, where less daylight gets in than you expect.

Older paint and lead

Houses built before 1970 may have lead paint under later coats. The NSW Government’s LeadSmart guidance explains how to reduce the risk when renovating. We test suspect surfaces, avoid dry sanding and keep dust contained. It is especially important in houses with children, and we ask about that during the first visit.

What to send us before we quote an Exeter job

A few details help us give you an accurate price quickly. Tell us roughly when the house was built, what the walls are made of, whether you want inside, outside or both, and whether sheds, fences or a roof are part of the job. Photographs of peeling areas, stains and any damp patches are useful, and so is a list of any dates you need to meet.

We will inspect on site before giving a fixed price in writing. If you are not sure what you need, ask. A conversation on the phone on 0434 432 267 is a good start, and our contact page works too.

Small village premises, halls and shopfronts

Not every Exeter job is a house. Village halls, community buildings and small businesses all need painting, and they carry different demands. Public buildings need durable, washable finishes for areas that get touched and scuffed. A weatherboard hall needs regular exterior repainting because every wall is exposed to the weather. We plan work around events, markets and opening hours, and finish areas in stages so the building stays usable. See our commercial painting page for more.

Nearby villages and towns we cover

Exeter jobs often come together with work in Bundanoon, Wingello, Sutton Forest and Moss Vale. If you are not sure whether we cover your address, check our areas we serve page or send a message through the contact page.

Exeter painting questions

Can you paint the stone on my Exeter house?

We usually recommend leaving natural stone unpainted. Paint traps moisture and often flakes away. We paint the timber and render beside it and cut a clean line at the stone.

Does a repaint help in a bushfire?

No. Painting does not change your bushfire risk. But repaint prep often finds gaps, rot and failed seals, which are worth fixing as part of preparing your property.

Can you quote a house, a shed and a fence together?

Yes. We measure everything on the first visit and can quote each building separately so you can stage the work.

What should I do about stains after a smoke event?

Tell us when we quote. Smoke and soot stains need a stain-blocking primer before topcoats, or they come through the new paint.

Do you cover Exeter from outside the village?

Yes. We service the Southern Highlands villages around Exeter, including Bundanoon, Wingello and Moss Vale. Call 0434 432 267 to book a visit.
