Gerringong sits on the South Coast between farmland and Seven Mile Beach. It grew as a dairy town, it now has weekenders, holiday lets and newer estates on its southern edge, and every one of those homes gets salt and wind from the Pacific. WM Painting & Decorating is licensed and insured, with over 10 years of painting and decorating experience, and we price Gerringong jobs for the exposure of the wall, the age of the building and how the house is used.

Beach houses and cottages with salt-affected walls, sticky windows and older plaster, prepared and finished to hold up in coastal air.
Ocean-facing walls, trim and decks washed free of salt, then coated with products chosen for wind-driven rain and strong sun.
Cafes, shops and holiday businesses painted around trading days and busy school-holiday weeks.
Iron and tiled roofs checked for rust at laps and fixings, cleaned and coated against salt.
Coastal colour advice that works with sand, sky and garden, and with the age of the house.
Gerringong homes near Werri Beach, Seven Mile Beach and Gerroa deal with salt carried in on the wind. It settles on walls, eaves, window frames and railings, attracts moisture and slowly breaks down paint. On a typical coastal house the elevation facing the ocean shows damage first: chalking, blistering, rust bleeding from fixings and timber that has gone grey at the joints.
We start every Gerringong exterior with a fresh-water wash, because paint cannot stick through a film of salt. We then scrape, sand, spot-prime and fix cracks before the topcoats. Where the house wears the weather on one side only, we often recommend repainting that side first and the sheltered sides later. Our exterior painting service is built around that kind of staged plan.
Gerringong’s history is mostly butter and milk. The Gerringong Co-Operative Dairy Society was formed in February 1888, and according to the Illawarra Mercury’s history of the co-op, it moved from a timber building to a brick one near the railway station in June 1908. The line from Kiama to Bomaderry was extended in 1893, which gave the co-op its siding. Kiama Library’s history of Gerringong places the town centre in 1857, with a post office, blacksmith, cooperage and the Gerringong Arms hotel.
For a painter, the lesson is that parts of the town are old. Brick and timber buildings of that age often carry several generations of paint, some of it lime-based or oil-based. We test adhesion before specifying a coating, and we do not put a tight modern film over masonry that needs to dry out.
Gerringong sits in the Kiama local government area, so heritage rules come from the Kiama Local Environmental Plan 2011. As Council’s heritage policy explains it, a heritage conservation area is shown on the Heritage Map and described in Schedule 5, and it includes any heritage items within it. Minor maintenance and repair of a heritage item, or work within a conservation area, is dealt with under clause 5.10 of the LEP using Council’s form.
We have not confirmed whether any particular Gerringong street sits inside a conservation area, and we will not guess for you. Check your address on the NSW Planning Portal spatial viewer or ask Council for a planning certificate. If your house or shopfront is a listed item, we raise colour and material changes with you before quoting, and a like-for-like repaint is a very different conversation from a new colour scheme.
The Elambra Estate is established residential land at the southern end of Gerringong, and newer houses there and elsewhere in the town have a different set of problems from the old cottages. Rendered walls, fibre-cement cladding and builder-grade paint can chalk, show hairline cracks as the structure settles and grow mould on the shaded side.
Before we repaint a newer home we ask whether the builder’s defects period has ended and which paint system was used, because that decides how we prime and what we apply over it. We fill and seal render cracks, wash off mildew, and recoat in a product that matches the existing sheen. Garage doors, fascias, eaves and fences are often the first to look tired, and repainting those alone can change how the whole house reads from the street. A new house also tends to have large flat wall areas, so any patchy repair shows up in side light. We feather repairs wide and recoat whole wall planes to corners, so you do not end up with a visible patch.
A lot of Gerringong houses are not lived in every day. Owners come down on weekends, rent to holiday guests or live in Sydney. That makes timing and access the main questions. We can arrange keys, work while the house is empty and send photos as stages finish, so you do not need to be on site.
For holiday rentals we aim to finish between bookings and avoid school-holiday peaks, when guests are most likely to be on the street and the house earns the most. Interior repaints of bedrooms, hallways and kitchens suit the quieter months. Interior painting in a rental also suits tougher, washable finishes in the rooms that take the most wear. In a house that sits empty for weeks, we also watch for mould on walls and ceilings, and treat it before painting so it does not return behind the new coat.
Roofs at the coast deal with salt on both faces. The top is rinsed by rain, but the underside of eaves and the areas under overhangs stay dry and collect salt that is never washed off. Rust usually starts at laps, screws, cut edges and valleys. If it is left, it spreads under the coating.
Our roof painting and spraying begins with a thorough clean, then rust treatment and sealing of laps and fixings, followed by the coating. We replace failed fixings where needed and tell you honestly if a section is past recoating. Gutters get the same attention, since salt-laden dust in a blocked gutter holds water against the fascia.
Coastal living means decks, pergolas, balustrades and outdoor furniture, and salt is hard on all of them. Handrails and top surfaces take sun and spray together, so coatings crack and let water into the grain. Rusty screws leave black streaks that bleed through new paint.
When we coat outdoor timber we sand back to sound wood, replace corroded fixings with stainless or coated ones where the structure allows, seal end grain and use a finish designed for horizontal surfaces that take foot traffic. A deck that is stained or oiled gets a different treatment from one that is painted, so we ask how you want it to look and how often you are happy to maintain it. Gates, fences and garden sheds follow the same rule: fix the fixings first, then coat.
NSW Government’s LeadSmart renovation advice states that lead paint was used in most Australian homes built before 1970. Older weatherboard cottages and dairy-era timber buildings in and around Gerringong are in that group.
The guidance is to wet scrape or wet sand, avoid open-flame torches, seal the work area, use a HEPA vacuum and leave paint alone if it is in good condition. We work that way, and we will talk through your options if sound paint on a pre-1970 house is not worth disturbing. For nearby jobs we also work in Kiama and Shellharbour.

It depends on exposure. Ocean-facing walls, trim and decks usually wear first, so look for chalking, blistering, cracks and rust stains. Rinsing the house with fresh water now and then helps. We assess the condition during the quote rather than quote a fixed number of years.
Yes. Salt left on a surface stops paint bonding properly, so every coastal exterior starts with a fresh-water wash and a dry-out period before we scrape, prime and coat.
Yes. We can arrange keys, work in the empty house and send photos as each stage finishes. We can also fit work between rental bookings if you tell us your calendar.
It depends on the address. Heritage items and conservation areas in the Kiama area are listed in the LEP, so check the Planning Portal or ask Council for a planning certificate. If your property is listed, ask about approval before changing colours or materials.
Check the builder’s defects period and paint specification first. Then we assess cracks, mildew and chalking, and choose a system that matches what is already on the wall.
