Kenthurst Painters for Acreage and Bushland Homes

Minimalist illustration representing interior painting.

Painting in Kenthurst, once known as Little Dural

Kenthurst was called Little Dural until 1887, when the name changed to honour settlers who had come from the English county of Kent. The suburb still feels more like farmland than the rest of Sydney: long driveways, big blocks, dams, sheds and bush at the back fence. WM Painting & Decorating is licensed and insured, with over 10 years of painting and decorating experience, and we price Kenthurst jobs around the size of the house, the outbuildings and how the block sits against the bush.

This page covers what we think about before we quote here: acreage access, bushfire-prone land, shaded walls, older farmhouses and the colours that suit a bush setting. To book a visit, call 0434 432 267 or use the contact page.

From orchards and timbergetters to acreage lifestyle blocks

The first Europeans to work this ridge were timbergetters, and the district then turned to fruit. The Hills Shire Council’s local history page describes citrus and stone fruit growing from the 1860s across the country from Parramatta to Dural, with poultry, eggs, milk and later market gardens taking over, and agriculture shrinking from the 1950s as houses spread north. The Dictionary of Sydney entry for Kenthurst records the 1887 renaming from Little Dural.

You can still see that history on the street. A weatherboard farmhouse from the orchard years can sit a few lots from a large brick-and-render home built in the last twenty years, and both can have a shed, a machinery barn or a granny flat out the back. Houses of different ages need different plans. The old timber one needs scraping, spot priming and patient paint on trim that has been recoated many times. The newer render needs crack repair, a good clean and a coating chosen for sun exposure. We write the quote room by room and building by building, so you can see where the money goes.

Long driveways, tall gables and a lot of wall

Many Kenthurst houses are big. Two-storey gables, feature chimneys and wide eaves add up to a lot of exterior surface, and the lower edges often sit above garden beds or sloping ground where a ladder will not stand safely. Before we price an exterior we look at how we will physically reach every wall: whether a scaffold or tower is needed, how close a vehicle can park, and whether gates, dams or retaining walls get in the way.

Acreage also means more than the house. Sheds, carports, pergolas, timber fences, a pool fence or a tennis court surround are often part of the same enquiry. We can quote the lot together, or stage it so the house comes first and the rest follows when budget allows. Where you rely on tank water we plan the wash-down so it does not drain your supply, and where there is a dam or creek on the block we keep run-off and paint away from it. If you have horses, chickens or dogs, tell us at the visit and we will plan the work around them.

Bushland at the back fence and painting in a bush fire prone area

Much of Kenthurst sits on or beside bushland, and land mapped as bush fire prone has to meet the NSW Rural Fire Service’s Planning for Bush Fire Protection 2019 when development is proposed. Painting is not the same thing as building, but the way a house is painted can quietly work against its defences. We do not paint over ember mesh, vent screens or gutter guards, and we mask weep holes and sub-floor vents so they stay open. We clear leaf litter from gutters and valleys before we start so the coating goes on a clean surface and the gutters can still drain.

Timber is the other thing to look at. Decks, pergolas, fascias and fences that have gone grey and cracked hold moisture in some spots and dry out to tinder in others, so recoating them is part of looking after the house. If you are also planning new cladding, a deck, an extension or a roof replacement, ask Council or an accredited bush fire consultant what level of construction applies. We can paint to whatever specification you are given, but we do not assess or certify bushfire ratings.

Shade, leaf litter and the green film on the south side

Gum trees and angophoras shade a lot of Kenthurst walls, and the shaded side of a house stays damp long after the sun side has dried. That is where algae, mould and lichen settle, usually on south and east walls, under eaves and along the base of render. Painting over that growth does not work: the film lifts the new coat within a season or two.

On these jobs we wash the surface properly, apply a mould treatment and let it work, rinse, and allow the wall to dry before we prime. Sometimes the better fix is outside the paint tin, such as trimming a branch back, clearing garden mulch that has built up against a wall, or adjusting a downpipe that is splashing the same patch every storm. We will point these out at the quote. Where sun hits one side of the house and shade covers the other, the two walls age at different rates, and we plan the system for each rather than treating the house as one surface.

Farmhouses, lead and colours that suit the bush

If your Kenthurst house was built before 1970, assume the older layers of paint contain lead. NSW LeadSmart advises leaving sound paint alone, using wet sanding or wet scraping, avoiding heat guns and open flames, and keeping children and pregnant or breastfeeding women away from the work. We follow the same approach: damp the surface, scrape rather than dry sand, contain the dust and bag the waste. On farmhouses with gardens and chickens close to the walls, we lay drop sheets wide and clean up with a vacuum rated for fine dust, not a household one.

Colour matters on a bush block. Bright whites and very dark charcoals can look out of place among tall eucalypts, and dark walls on a north-facing facade take more heat. Many owners go for warm greys, sandy neutrals and muted greens that sit with the foliage. Our colour consultation includes large sample patches viewed in morning and afternoon light, which is the only reliable way to judge a colour under tree cover. Some Kenthurst properties may carry heritage controls, so ask The Hills Shire Council whether yours is listed before changing a scheme.

Between Dural, Hornsby and the rest of the Hills

Kenthurst has several neighbours we also cover. Next door is Dural, with a similar mix of old orchard houses and new builds. Further north-east is Hornsby, and our Hills District page covers the wider area. For the full list, see areas we serve.

If you are weighing up interior work too, our interior painting, exterior painting and roof painting pages explain how each job runs from first visit to final walk-through.

Kenthurst painting questions

Can you quote the house and the sheds together?

Yes. We price the main house, outbuildings, fences and decks as separate lines in one written quote, so you can do everything at once or stage it.

Does repainting a house on bush fire prone land need approval?

Repainting is normally maintenance rather than new development, but check with Council if your plans also include new cladding, a deck, an extension or a roof. We keep vents, mesh and gutter guards clear, but we do not certify bushfire ratings.

Why does my shaded wall keep going green?

Trees and poor drainage keep the surface damp, so algae returns even after painting. We treat and rinse the growth first, then suggest fixes like pruning or redirecting a downpipe.

Is my Kenthurst farmhouse likely to have lead paint?

If it was built before 1970, assume so. We scrape wet, avoid heat guns, contain dust and bag the waste.

What colours work on a bush block?

Warm greys, sandy neutrals and muted greens tend to sit well under gum trees. We test large sample patches in morning and afternoon light before you commit.
