Narellan Painters Who Plan Around Western Sydney Heat

Minimalist illustration representing interior painting.

Narellan paint has to survive the sun first and the weather second

Narellan sits inland in the Camden area, a long way from any sea breeze, and its houses range from 1970s brick to estates finished in the last few years. That mix and that climate shape how we paint here. WM Painting & Decorating is licensed and insured, with over 10 years of painting and decorating experience, and every Narellan quote starts with which way the walls face and how old the coating underneath is.

From a surveyed village to a retail centre

Camden Council’s Narellan history page says William Hovell named the area Narelling in 1816, the township was surveyed in the 1820s, and settlement stayed sparse through the 1840s because nearby Camden was more popular. The Camden to Campbelltown railway opened in 1882 with Narellan as one of nine stops, and the line closed in the 1960s.

That slow start matters to a painter in one way: most of the housing here comes from the growth that followed, not from the village years. Where an older timber home has been extended several times, we plan for layers of paint of different ages and test before we promise a finish.

The 1970s brick belt

The same Council page says the Camden Bypass was completed in 1974 and that suburban development grew sharply through the 1970s. A lot of Narellan and Narellan Vale houses come from that wave: brick veneer, low-pitched roofs, aluminium windows and painted eaves.

After fifty years, the paint on those eaves, fascias and window surrounds is usually on its last coat, and the timber behind it can have started to soften. Our exterior painting starts with probing the timber, replacing anything that fails the test, priming bare patches and then applying two full coats. Gutters get cleaned and inspected before we start, because water overflowing from a blocked gutter ruins new paint on the fascia below.

Heat that bakes paint

Western Sydney University researchers say heatwaves in Western Sydney can be 8 to 10 degrees hotter than in the eastern suburbs, and that the region averages 15.4 days a year above 35 degrees, a figure that could rise to 46 by 2090. Their article on Western Sydney heat also notes that treeless suburbs with dark roofs and driveways amplify the problem.

For a painter, extreme heat means three decisions. We schedule exterior coats for the cooler part of the day so the paint does not skin over too fast. We recommend quality acrylic that stays flexible, and we avoid very dark body colours on north and west walls unless the product is rated for it. On roofs, a lighter colour can help, and our roof painting and spraying service can talk you through the options.

Estates to the west and south-west

Camden Council’s South West Growth Area page describes about 17,000 hectares of greenfield land in 16 precincts across Camden, Campbelltown and Liverpool. In Camden, Turner Road (Gledswood Hills and Gregory Hills) was rezoned in 2007 for about 4,200 homes, and Lowes Creek Maryland was rezoned in July 2021 for about 7,000.

Homes from the earliest estates are now past the point where first-coat colours have faded and builder-grade paint has chalked. Their typical problems are hairline render cracks, tight eaves that trap dirt and fine mould on shaded southern walls. We wash, spot-prime and recoat, and if you want a refresh we offer a colour consultation so the trim and render suit the street.

Shops, clinics and the town centre

Narellan’s retail hub grew from the mid-1990s, when the first stage of the NTC shopping centre opened, according to the same Council history. A retail centre of that size draws shops, offices and service businesses around it, and they all need a clean presentation.

Our commercial painting crew paints outside trading hours, protects stock and fittings, and returns the space ready to open. We stage work in sections so a tenancy with limited back-of-house space can keep operating, and we agree the colour and finish with the landlord first if the lease requires it.

Older timber homes and lead

A few Narellan homes pre-date the 1970s boom, including weatherboard houses with decades of paint on them. The NSW Government’s LeadSmart advice says lead paint was used in most Australian homes built before 1970 and recommends wet sanding or scraping, sealing the work area and using a HEPA vacuum to clean up. It also says paint in good condition can be left alone or painted over.

When we suspect lead, we say so at the quote stage, set up the work area accordingly and talk the household through what to expect. LeadSmart advises keeping pregnant or breastfeeding women and young children away from the work.

Keeping interiors usable through summer

Inside a Narellan house, the heat shows up differently. Upstairs bedrooms and west-facing living rooms run hot, and ceilings can stain where roof condensation or a leaking tile has dripped through. Paint on a ceiling like that fails as a patch, so we find and fix the source before we paint it.

For interior painting we use washable low-sheen finishes in busy rooms and a flat ceiling white that hides roller marks. We move furniture to the room’s centre, sheet it, and clean up each evening, so you can keep living in the house while we work through it room by room. If you are preparing a property for sale or rent, tell us the date and we will work back from it.

Working with the neighbours around Narellan

Our Camden-area crews also work in nearby suburbs. See our pages for Mt Annan, Campbelltown, Leppington and Picton to compare local conditions. Narellan’s blend of old and new houses means we often quote the same street twice, once for a 1970s brick home and once for a newer render house, and the two quotes look quite different.

If you are not sure which type of job you have, send us a few photos and we will tell you what to expect before the site visit.

Narellan painting questions

What time of day should exterior painting be done in Narellan?

Mornings and late afternoons. Painting hot walls in full sun makes the coat dry too fast, which weakens adhesion and leaves lap marks.

Is a dark colour a bad idea in Western Sydney?

Not always, but it is harder on the paint. We use products made for heat and recommend lighter colours on north and west walls.

My 1970s brick home has peeling eaves. Is that urgent?

Yes, because moisture reaches the timber behind. We probe for rot, replace what has failed and then repaint.

Do new estate homes need repainting already?

Some do, especially trim and render with chalking or hairline cracks. We inspect and only recommend what the surfaces need.

Can you paint shopfronts after hours?

Yes. We work outside trading hours and leave the space clean for opening.
