Picton is the largest town in Wollondilly, and it has a railway viaduct from 1862, sandstone churches and a main street of old hotels and shopfronts. It also has Stonequarry Creek, which has flooded the town before. WM Painting & Decorating is licensed and insured, with over 10 years of painting and decorating experience, and in Picton we begin by asking two questions: how old is the building, and how close is it to the creek?

Interiors in cottages, shopfronts and newer homes, with plaster repair and moisture checks before any paint goes on.
Weatherboard, brick, render and timber trim prepared for heritage details, with breathable products where the wall needs them.
Cafes, offices and retail tenancies repainted outside trading hours with minimal disruption to the street.
Metal and tile roofs on town houses, farm sheds and outbuildings cleaned, repaired and recoated.
Colour advice that respects the age of the building and the character of the street.
Wollondilly’s Picton historic walking tour brochure says Picton is one of the earliest European settlements in NSW, that the railway arrived in the 1860s and that the first train reached Picton Station on 1 July 1863. Picton became a municipality in 1895. The same brochure lists dozens of places of interest, from the George IV Inn, built in 1839 with sweeping verandas and sandstone walls, to Pickard’s Store of 1901.
For a painter, a town like this means the building in front of you is rarely a blank wall. There may be many layers of paint, lime wash underneath, repairs from different decades and details that cannot be replaced. We inspect, test and plan the preparation before we quote.
The NSW Planning Portal lists a Wollondilly heritage planning proposal that would add 52 new heritage items, three landscape conservation areas and increase the extent of the Picton Conservation Area. It went to public exhibition from 27 February to 28 March 2024 and was returned to the Department for drafting on 29 April 2025. When we read it, the decision was not yet marked as published.
So the boundary may change. If your house or shopfront is in or near the town centre, ask Wollondilly Council whether a heritage listing or conservation area applies to your street before you finalise colours, signage or repairs. We can help prepare photos and a colour proposal for that conversation.
Sandstone is part of Picton: the brochure describes the George IV Inn’s sandstone structures, sandstone blocks reused in the 1864 Court House, and the sandstone piers under the 1899 Stonequarry Creek Bridge.
We generally do not paint unpainted sandstone. Sealing it traps moisture and salts, and the face then flakes away. Where sandstone has been painted before, we clean gently, repair with a compatible mortar and use a breathable mineral or masonry product so the wall can still dry. If you are unsure whether stone should be coated, we will tell you plainly when the answer is no.
The brochure describes the Old Railway Hotel as built in the 1860s, the Old Post Office as completed in 1892 with a clock tower added in 1982, and the old bank building of 1886 as a fine example of period architecture. Argyle Street, the main street, is lined with older commercial buildings, so the joinery, fascias and trim usually carry decades of paint.
Our commercial painting team works around opening hours, uses drop sheets and scaffold where verandahs need it, and masks glass and signage carefully. On older shopfronts we usually strip failed paint from joinery and cast-iron details before recoating, because new paint on loose old paint will lift in a season.
The brochure notes the Station Master’s Residence dating from 1877 and says many houses on Campbell Street were built between the 1890s and 1910s, when the railway yards were busy. Timber and weatherboard houses from this period are the most common older stock around the station precinct.
They need steady maintenance: scraping flaking paint, replacing rotted boards, renailing and priming before the topcoat. The NSW Government’s LeadSmart renovating advice says lead paint was used in most Australian homes built before 1970, and recommends wet sanding or scraping, no open flame and sealed work areas. We follow that approach and explain the plan to you in advance.
The brochure says St Mark’s Anglican Church, built between 1850 and 1856, has been affected by flooding since 1860, and that the first timber bridge over the creek was washed away in the great floods of 1860. More recently, Wollondilly Council adopted the Stonequarry Floodplain Risk Management Study and Plan in June 2020, and its draft flood controls for Stonequarry Creek asks owners to check whether their property is in the flood planning area.
If your property has been wet, do not repaint too early. Walls and subfloors need to dry completely, mould needs treating and damaged plaster should be replaced. We can paint the lower walls with a more water-tolerant system, but we will not seal in damp.
Older Picton houses often have high ceilings, timber floors, picture rails and plaster that has moved with the building. Hairline cracks open at corners and above doors, and in damp spots the paint blisters from the back. We scrape back loose film, cut out failed plaster, fix the cause of any damp and prime stained patches so they do not bleed through.
Our interior painting team protects floors and joinery, keeps picture rails and cornices crisp with careful cutting-in, and works room by room so you can stay in the house. Where a heritage colour scheme is important to you, we can test small patches on the wall before committing to a whole room.
The brochure describes Wollondilly as 35 towns and villages across 2,560 square kilometres of bushland, hills and agricultural land. Many properties around Picton have outbuildings, machinery sheds and long fence lines in addition to the house.
We paint iron and Colorbond roofs on sheds and homes with a proper wash, rust treatment and coating, and we quote the house and outbuildings together so you do not have to coordinate two crews. Nearby areas we also cover include Narellan, Mt Annan and Campbelltown, and our roof painting and spraying page explains how a roof job works.

Ask Wollondilly Council. The Picton Conservation Area is the subject of a heritage planning proposal that would extend it, so check the current boundary for your address.
Usually not. Painting can trap moisture and salts and cause the stone to deteriorate. We advise on cleaning and repair instead.
Yes, but only once the walls are fully dry and any mould or damaged plaster has been dealt with. We will not paint over damp.
We assume homes built before 1970 may contain it, use wet methods, seal the work area and clean up with a HEPA vacuum.
Yes. We can quote the sheds and roofs together with the house.
