Shellharbour is a city of very different streets. There are brand new terraces around the Shell Cove marina, 1960s and 70s brick veneer and fibro in Warilla and Barrack Heights, and older farm-era cottages out at Albion Park. A good painter treats each of those differently, and that is how WM Painting & Decorating works. We are licensed, insured and have over 10 years of painting and decorating experience.
Below you will find what actually matters for painting in Shellharbour: salt and lake air, the first repaint on a new home, heritage listings in Albion Park and the village, and old paint that needs handling carefully. Ready to talk? Call 0434 432 267 for a free quote.

Shell Cove is the newest part of the city. The marina was a joint venture between Shellharbour City Council and Frasers Property, and the story of its decades-long development is told on the Shell Cove project site. Many homes there are modern terraces and double-storey builds, some approved up to three storeys right on the harbour boardwalk. Those homes arrive painted in a builder’s standard white, and the owners soon want colour, a feature wall or a tougher finish on high-traffic walls.
Warilla, Barrack Heights, Oak Flats and Mount Warrigal are mostly established suburbs with a lot of brick veneer and fibro homes from the 1960s to the 1980s. The paint on these has often been through three or four owners and several repaints. Prep matters far more than the colour. Our neighbours at Barrack Heights have a similar mix, so that page is worth a read if you live near the border.
Albion Park and Albion Park Rail sit further inland with a rural history, older weatherboard cottages, and a few buildings that carry local heritage listings. Each area gets its own inspection before we quote.
Shellharbour has a long ocean frontage and Lake Illawarra on its northern edge, so a large share of homes sit within reach of salt-laden wind. Salt dries on walls and trims, pulls moisture into the surface and attacks paint from underneath. You see it first as bubbling on timber windowsills, flaking fascias and rust bleeding from fixings.
Our approach on exposed homes is practical. We wash the salt off with fresh water, scrape and sand back to sound paint, spot prime bare timber and metal, and use an exterior acrylic that suits the surface. We also caulk gaps around windows and joins, because water gets in there before it shows on the face of the wall. Dulux publishes a clear exterior preparation guide that matches how we work, including the tape test for checking whether old paint is still sticking.
Wind-driven rain from the south east is the other pressure point. South and east walls hold moisture longer, so they grow mould sooner. A mould wash before painting stops it returning within a year or two. Read more about the process on our exterior painting page.
New homes behave differently from old ones. Fresh render and masonry need time to cure, and Dulux advises at least 28 days before painting new masonry. Painting too early traps moisture and salts and causes patchy colour or peeling later. If your Shell Cove house is still within that period, we will tell you to wait rather than take your money early.
New plaster also moves. Hairline cracks open at joins and corners in the first year as the frame settles, so many owners prefer to colour the walls once, then do a light touch up the following year. We can plan the job that way.
Builder-white walls and ceilings are usually a cheap flat acrylic that marks easily. We recommend a washable low sheen on hallways, kids’ rooms and kitchens, and if you cannot decide on colour, our colour consultation helps you choose from real samples on your own walls, in your own light. Our interior painting team handles the rest.
Shellharbour Village began as part of D’Arcy Wentworth’s 1821 grant, which he called the Peterborough Estate, and the council’s heritage records list a Shellharbour Foreshore Conservation Area. A proposal to heritage-list the whole village was dropped after community objections around 2011, but individual items remain. In Albion Park the local heritage items include Tulkeroo and the former Butter Factory on Calderwood Road, and the Killarney Complex at Shell Cove is also listed.
If your building is a listed item, check with Shellharbour City Council before changing colours or materials. For general interest, the council’s museum publishes an Albion Park Heritage Trail showing which older buildings are still standing.
For older cottages, we use sympathetic palettes: muted body colours, a contrasting trim and a darker accent on doors. We will not paint over detailed timber trim without cleaning and priming it properly first, because that traps the old problems underneath.
A lot of Warilla, Barrack Heights and Oak Flats housing is fibro or timber from before the 1980s. Two things apply. First, homes built before 1970 probably have lead in the older paint layers. The NSW EPA’s LeadSmart renovating advice says to avoid dry sanding and heat, wet clean the dust, bag waste and keep children and pregnant women away. We follow those rules on suspect surfaces.
Second, fibro made before the late 1980s may contain asbestos. We do not dry sand or drill it. We wash, seal and paint, and we suggest testing before any repair that would break the sheet. If you plan to renovate and are unsure, ask us before you start.
You get a free quote, a visit, a fixed price in writing and a clear start date. We handle protection, repairs, priming, two topcoats and a walk-through at the end. You will also hear honestly if the best answer is a smaller job than you expected.
We cover Shellharbour, Warilla, Albion Park, Oak Flats, Flinders and the lake suburbs, as well as nearby Kiama, Gerringong and Wollongong. Contact us through the contact page or ring 0434 432 267. If you want to see the whole footprint, our areas we serve list is there too.

New render and masonry should cure for at least 28 days before painting, according to Dulux. Interior walls can usually be painted sooner, but we will check the surface and moisture before starting.
Yes. With the ocean and Lake Illawarra close by, salt builds up on walls and trims and holds moisture against the surface. We wash it off with fresh water before sanding and use coatings suited to exposed homes.
If it was built before 1970, possibly. The NSW EPA says most homes from that era contain lead paint. Avoid dry sanding and contact us before disturbing flaking paint.
Only for listed items. Individual buildings in Albion Park and Shell Cove carry local heritage listings, and the village has a foreshore conservation area. Check with Shellharbour City Council if your building might be listed.
