Thirroul is a narrow strip of coast with the Illawarra escarpment right behind it. Sea air blows in from the east, rain and runoff come down from the west, and the houses in between range from timber bungalows a century old to modern renovations. WM Painting & Decorating is licensed and insured, with over 10 years of painting and decorating experience, and we price Thirroul jobs for salt, damp, old timber and the way each house actually sits on its block.
This page explains what we look for in Thirroul: weatherboard and fibro, the station and beachside heritage, salt exposure and old paint layers. To book a visit, call 0434 432 267 or use the contact page.

Cafes, shops and offices around the village centre, painted in stages around trading hours.
Roof coatings for iron and tile roofs that cop salt spray, with rusted sheets and flashings dealt with first.
Colour advice that suits sea light and a mix of period cottages and newer builds.
The State Library of NSW catalogue records that a house called Wyewurk at 3 Craig Street was built by Thomas Irons in 1910 and described as one of the earliest houses in Australia in the Californian bungalow style. D. H. Lawrence rented it for about two and a half months in 1922, arriving in Sydney on 27 May and leaving in August, and wrote the novel Kangaroo there in six weeks. You can read the library’s catalogue entry. The house is a private home and not open to visitors, so please respect the owners if you walk past.
The era is what interests us. Thirroul has plenty of homes from the 1910s to the 1930s, with timber windows, deep verandahs, exposed rafters and decorative gables. Houses of that age often have a century of paint on them. Doing the work properly means careful scraping, repairs to rotted sections, sound primer and top coats chosen for movement in old timber. It also means leaving details like fretwork and window mouldings crisp, not clogged with thick paint.
The NSW State Heritage Inventory entry for Thirroul Railway Station Group says the station opened in June 1887 as Robbinsville and was renamed Thirroul in November 1891. Its platform buildings are weatherboard with corrugated steel roofs. The Railway Institute building dates from 1921 and was extended in 1937, with timber walls up to sill height and fibro above. The group was listed on the State Heritage Register on 2 April 1999.
That combination of weatherboard, fibro sheeting and corrugated iron is typical of the whole coast, and it is what we paint most. Each surface behaves differently. Weatherboards need their joints and nail holes filled and sealed. Fibro needs a sound sealer and, if it is damaged or breaking up, an assessment before anyone sands it. Corrugated roofs need the rust treated and the laps sealed. Treating them as one material is what causes early failures, so we write the quote by surface.
Thirroul homes get weathered from two directions. Close to the beach, salt settles on walls, window frames, gutters and roof edges. A wall that looks clean can have a film of salt under the surface that stops new paint sticking. We wash with fresh water, and on exposed sites we give the walls a second rinse before we prime. We also look at the hardware: rusting fixings, corroded flashings and tired window seals that let water behind the paint.
On the western side, houses sit tight against the escarpment, so there is shade, extra moisture and runoff from the slope. Lower walls and timber near the ground stay damp, and paint blisters from behind. In these cases we fix drainage and ventilation before we finish. A repaint of a damp wall without those repairs only lasts until the next heavy rain, so we would rather tell you straight and sort the cause first.
Wollongong City Council asks owners of heritage items and houses in heritage conservation areas to get a colour scheme approved by its heritage staff before repainting, and publishes repainting and colour guidelines to help. We have not found a conservation area covering Thirroul itself, but individual items are listed, including the railway buildings, so it is worth checking your address with Council.
For a listed or period-sensitive home we recommend a colour consultation before you buy any paint. Our colour consultation puts large samples on the wall and looks at roof, trim and wall colours as a set. For ordinary homes without heritage constraints you have much more freedom, though a tone that suits the sea light and the greenery tends to look best on this coast.
If your Thirroul house was built before 1970, expect lead in the older layers. NSW LeadSmart recommends leaving good paint alone, wet scraping or wet sanding when removal is needed, never using open flames and keeping children and pregnant or breastfeeding women away from the work. We use damp scraping, contain dust with plastic and drop sheets, and bag the waste. We do not use heat guns on old paint.
Fibro sheeting needs particular care. Products made before the late 1980s may contain asbestos, and the NSW asbestos site says you cannot tell by looking, that there is no known safe level of exposure and that licensed professionals should handle renovation work involving it. If we find cracked, weathered or damaged sheeting we stop, tell you and recommend testing before any further prep. Intact sheeting that is simply washed and repainted is a different job from sheeting that is broken up.
Commercial work in a seaside village has its own rules. Awnings, signs, timber shopfronts and rear lanes all take salt and sun, and a cafe cannot close for a week to be repainted. We prefer to paint in stages: one frontage, one side wall or one dining area at a time, with clear tape lines and fresh-paint signs so customers still find the door. If out-of-hours work suits your lease and neighbours, we can talk about it at the quote.
Surfaces matter as much as the schedule. Old render around windows often hides hairline cracks, steel awning brackets rust through their paint, and timber window sills near the footpath collect moisture. We repair those first, then use a durable exterior finish with a cleanable sheen on the lower walls where trolleys, bikes and passing traffic leave marks. Our commercial painting page sets out how we plan these jobs, and we will give you a fixed price in writing before we start.
South of Thirroul is Bulli, then Corrimal and the city of Wollongong. Up the escarpment is Helensburgh. For the complete list, see areas we serve.
Our exterior painting and roof painting pages explain the process in more detail, and commercial painting covers shops and cafes.

There is no single answer. It depends on the paint system, the exposure and the last prep. We inspect the walls and tell you if they need work now or can wait.
Yes, if the paint is sound. We scrape loose areas, fill and sand, spot prime and recoat. If layers are failing everywhere, a deeper strip may be better.
We stop and recommend testing. Damaged sheeting from older homes may contain asbestos, and it should be handled by licensed professionals.
Yes. We treat the rust, replace failed fixings or flashings where needed, seal the laps and then coat the roof.
We have not found a conservation area covering Thirroul, but some individual buildings are listed. Check your address with Wollongong City Council before changing a scheme.
