Most villages are shaped by their buildings. Wingello is shaped by the fires that took them. The Australian Railway Historical Society’s history of Wingello says the Chatsbury bushfire of 6 March 1965 destroyed about 80 per cent of the houses in the village, that the village and the State forest recovered, and that the orchard industry did not. Fifty-five years later, the Morton Fire of January 2020 destroyed more homes. That means Wingello has houses from several rebuild generations, and each age of house wants a different approach from a painter. WM Painting & Decorating is licensed and insured, with over 10 years of painting and decorating experience, and we start every Wingello quote by asking when the house was built.
This page covers the 1965 rebuild era, 2020 rebuilds, the timber landmarks, forest-edge preparation and older paint. To book a visit, call 0434 432 267 or use the contact page.

The Wingello history says the station buildings survived the Chatsbury fire of 6 March 1965, but the assistant station master’s cottage was one of many buildings destroyed and the Housing Commission later built a replacement. The Bundanoon History Group’s page on fire in the district records the same year differently, giving 13 March and 31 houses lost, so the sources do not agree on the figures. Either way, a large share of the village was rebuilt in the late 1960s.
Houses from that era are now around sixty years old. They are due for a second or third repaint, and they may contain materials that need caution. Fibro sheeting from the period may contain asbestos and must not be sanded dry, and paint before the 1970s may contain lead. We check, test and plan before we scrape anything, and we tell you the cost of that care at the quote stage.
The Bundanoon History Group says the Morton Fire destroyed eight homes in Wingello on 4 and 5 January 2020, alongside four in Bundanoon and two in Exeter. Rebuilt houses are new timber, new plaster and new cladding, and their painting needs are different from a sixty-year-old cottage. The Master Builders Association NSW 2022 awards entry for Wombat House at Wingello describes a rebuild for owners whose original house burned in 2020, designed in the form of a farm shed and built with timber from dead trees the fire did not destroy.
New timber needs all faces primed, including the back and cut ends, before it goes outside. We check moisture before painting, because timber that is still wet pushes paint off. On new plaster, we seal and let it cure. If your builder is still within a defects period, ask what the contract says about paint before you book us.
The State Heritage Inventory record for the Wingello Railway Station group lists a timber station building from 1871, a timber island-side building and signal box from 1915 and brick platform faces, and says the group is a good example of a small country station with its platforms and buildings intact. The ARHS history adds that a Mechanics Institute Hall opened in 1902 across the road from the station and an Anglican church was built in 1914.
Timber is the main material in these landmarks, and it shows wear on the sunny and the wet sides first. We look at sun, shelter and the ground around each wall to see where paint has failed and why. Fix the cause first, and the paint will last.
According to the ARHS history, railway workers arrived in January 1865 and the timber industry, supplying sleepers for the railway, provided more permanent work. As late as 1883 there were doubts the village would survive once the timber was cut out. It did, because the railway kept it employed, and by 1910 orchard and forestry industries had developed around it.
For an owner today, the history is a reminder that Wingello grew around timber. Timber houses do not need fancy finishes, but they do need regular paint. Weatherboard and timber windows last decades when sealed and painted on a cycle of several years. Delay too long, and rot sets in. We will tell you which boards need replacing and which can be saved.
Wingello sits beside a State forest. The NSW Rural Fire Service’s prepare your property guidance recommends clearing gutters of leaves and twigs, covering windows and doors with fine metal mesh, sealing gaps around doors and windows, closing off the space under the house and repairing gaps in external walls. A coat of paint is not on that list, and we do not claim it changes your risk.
Where we help is in the repair work around the paint. When we prepare a wall, we find gaps, open joints and rotten boards, and we fix or flag them. We also keep leaf litter out of gutters and off roofs while we work. If you are renovating or rebuilding on bush fire prone land, ask your certifier about requirements before choosing cladding or finishes.
The ARHS history notes that the general store and post office is the only one of the village’s early businesses still operating. For a painting job, that means supplies are not around the corner. We order materials ahead, bring spare product for touch-ups and plan access so we can finish a day’s work without extra trips.
It also means neighbours know each other. We tell the next-door property when scaffolds, spray work or noisy tools are coming, keep driveways clear and take our rubbish with us. On larger blocks we park off the road and keep gates closed so stock and pets stay where they should.
Forest-edge properties collect leaf litter and bark. These hold water against iron sheets and clog gutters, which brings rust at the edges and laps. We clear the roof, wash it, treat rust, replace failed fixings and apply a coating made for metal. See our roof painting and spraying page for the process.
For sheds, carports and water tanks, we can price them with the house or leave them for another visit.
Homes that pre-date 1970 may have lead paint. The NSW Government’s LeadSmart renovating guidance explains how to limit dust and keep the family safe. We test suspect surfaces, wet-sand or strip rather than dry sand and contain dust. Tell us if children live in the house.
Houses in forest country look best in colours that sit with the bush. Greens, warm greys and earth tones tend to blend, while very bright colours can look stark. Dark colours also run hotter in full sun, which is hard on timber, so we check the light reflectance value of a colour before recommending it for a sunny wall. Roof, walls, trim and gutters should work together, and we show you samples on the wall in morning and afternoon light before you commit.
Interior work in Wingello often follows a repair. Smoke-affected rooms need cleaning, a stain-blocking primer and a topcoat, or the odour and stain return. Rebuilt homes need new plaster sealed and painted in the right order, and builders’ dust cleaned away before we start. We mask floors, fittings and windows and clean up each day. Our interior painting page lists the steps.
If you are choosing colours for a new home among trees, a colour consultation can help you test options in the actual light before the first coat goes on.
Tell us when the house was built, whether it is original or a rebuild, what the walls are made of and what you want painted. If you have had smoke damage, mention it. If the house is within a builder’s defects period, tell us, so we can check the contract with you before painting anything that could affect a claim. Photographs of problem areas save time. We will visit, measure and give you a fixed price in writing. Call 0434 432 267 or use the contact page.
We also cover Bundanoon, Exeter, Tallong and Sutton Forest. See our areas we serve page for the full list, and use the contact page to start a quote. For interior work in rebuilt homes, our interior painting page explains our steps.

Not always. We check moisture, prime every face and cut end and paint when the timber is dry enough. Painting wet timber causes peeling.
They can. Houses built before 1970 may have lead paint, and fibro from that period may contain asbestos. We test suspect surfaces and use safe methods.
No. Painting does not change risk. We do repair gaps, rot and open joints while we prepare, which fits with RFS advice on sealing gaps in external walls.
