Painters in Wollongong who know what the coast does to paint

WM Painting & Decorating is a licensed and insured painting team serving Wollongong and the wider Illawarra, with over 10 years of painting and decorating experience. If you are comparing painters in Wollongong, the useful question is not who sounds cheapest on the phone. It is who will tell you honestly what your house needs before a tin is opened.

This page is a local guide as much as a sales page. It covers how the Illawarra climate treats paint, what Wollongong’s mix of housing needs, where heritage colour rules apply, what to do about lead paint in older homes, and how we quote. When you are ready, call 0434 432 267 or request a free quote and we will put a fixed price in writing.

What Illawarra weather does to your paint

Wollongong sits between the Tasman Sea and the escarpment, and your paintwork has to cope with both. Depending on which weather station you read, the city gets roughly 1.1 to 1.2 metres of rain a year, with February the wettest month and September the driest. You can check the figures yourself in the Bureau of Meteorology climate data. Humidity regularly sits in the 70s per cent. That combination is hard on exterior paint in four specific ways.

Salt comes first. Anything within a few streets of the beach or harbour, from North Wollongong and Fairy Meadow down to Port Kembla, collects salt on walls, gutters and window frames. Salt holds moisture against the surface, which speeds up blistering on timber and rust on steel fascias and balustrades. We wash salt off properly before sanding, because paint applied over a salt crust fails early.

Damp is second. South and south-east faces under the escarpment, or tucked behind retaining walls, stay wet for days after rain. Mould grows straight back through paint that was applied over it. On those walls a mould wash and a mould-resistant primer are not optional, and Dulux’s own exterior preparation guide says the same about treating mould before you prime.

UV is third. Summer sun on a north or west wall chalks and fades dark colours quickly. If you want charcoal or navy on a west-facing wall, tell us early. We will recommend a paint made for dark colours and say plainly how much fade to expect.

Timing is the fourth. Spring and autumn give the best drying windows on this coast. After a wet week we check moisture in the timber before we paint, rather than sealing damp in. Our exterior painting service is planned around that.

Wollongong housing, from escarpment cottages to CBD apartments

Wollongong is not one housing type, so one method does not fit. The older suburbs have plenty of timber and fibro cottages from the years when the steelworks drew families to the area, brick veneer homes from the 1960s and 70s, and newer townhouses and apartment blocks around the CBD. Each one calls for a different prep job.

Weatherboard and fibro cottages need joints checked, cracked sheets sealed and a proper acrylic primer before any colour goes on. Fibro built before the late 1980s may contain asbestos, so we do not dry sand it. We wash and seal it, and we recommend testing before any repair or removal.

Brick veneer and rendered homes need efflorescence cleaned off, hairline render cracks filled with a flexible filler, and a sealer where the render is chalky. A coat of paint over chalky render just peels.

Apartments and commercial premises in the CBD need work scheduled around residents and trading hours. That is the whole point of our commercial painting approach: minimal disruption and a clear finish date. Inside any of these properties, our interior painting covers ceilings, walls, doors and trims, and if you cannot settle on colours our colour consultation narrows it down with real samples on your wall.

Heritage areas: check before you choose a colour

Wollongong City Council lists more than 490 local heritage sites and nine conservation areas. The ones owners hear about most include Austinmer, Old Bulli, Bulli Commercial Centre, Brownsville, the Illawarra Escarpment, Kembla Heights Mining Village and Market Street. If your home is a heritage item or sits in a conservation area, council wants the colour scheme approved before work starts, and it tells owners not to begin until approval is in hand.

The usual route is a minor works exemption rather than a full development application. Start with the council’s heritage work page and its Heritage Repainting and Colour Guidelines, then speak to the heritage staff about your proposed colours. We cannot approve colours for you, but we can prepare a clear colour plan with paint names and finishes listed so council can assess it quickly. Roof colour and material changes also need approval in these areas, so raise any roof painting plans early.

Lead paint in pre-1970 Wollongong homes

Most Australian homes built before 1970 have lead paint somewhere. The NSW EPA’s LeadSmart renovating guide warns that the danger rises when old paint is sanded or burned off, and that lead dust builds up in roof spaces, wall cavities and under floorboards. Wollongong has a lot of homes from that era.

If your house is that age, our rule is simple. No dry sanding and no heat guns on suspect paint. We scrape and wet sand with dust control, seal the waste, keep children and pregnant women away from the work area, and clean up wet rather than sweeping. The national Lead Alert guide covers testing and personal protection if you want to read the detail. If you have flaking paint on a pre-1970 home, call us before you start scraping it yourself.

Painting beyond the CBD: the whole Illawarra coast

Most people searching for painters in Wollongong actually live somewhere along the coastal strip, and we work across it. To the north, we have local pages for Helensburgh, Stanwell Tops and Waterfall. Closer in, there are pages for Thirroul, Bulli, Corrimal and Heathcote.

South of the city we cover Barrack Heights, Shellharbour, Kiama and Gerringong. The full list is on our areas we serve page. Each suburb has its own weather, housing and council rules, which is why the advice on each page is different.

For a picture of the area itself, the ABS Census QuickStats for Wollongong shows the age, size and type of local dwellings.

How a quote and a job work with us

We start with a free quote. Tell us what you want painted and we visit, look at the surfaces, and talk through colours and finishes. The price you get is fixed and in writing, so there are no surprise extras halfway through. We use premium paint brands and match the product to the surface rather than using one tin for everything.

Before any painting, we protect floors and furniture, repair cracks and flaking areas, and prime where needed. The topcoats go on with clean lines, and at the end we walk through the job with you. If something is not right, we fix it before we leave. We also offer aftercare support, so you have someone to call if you notice a problem later.

If you have a roof, a tired facade, a rental that needs turning around or a feature wall in mind, our decorating and wallpaper service and the rest of the range are all available across Wollongong. The fastest way to start is the contact page.

Wollongong painting questions answered

Do I need council approval to repaint my house in Wollongong?

Usually not, unless the property is a heritage item or sits in a conservation area. In those cases Wollongong City Council wants the colour scheme approved first, normally through a minor works exemption. Check your property with council before you book a painter.

How often should a coastal Wollongong home be repainted?

It depends on exposure, paint quality and prep, but as a rough guide exterior paint near the beach needs attention sooner than paint on a sheltered inland street. Salt-exposed faces and north or west walls usually show wear first. We can inspect and tell you honestly whether it needs a full repaint or just spot repairs.

Could my older Wollongong home have lead paint?

If it was built before 1970, very likely. The NSW EPA says lead paint was used in most homes of that era. Do not dry sand or burn it off. Get advice before you disturb it, and ask us how we handle old paint safely.

When is the best time of year to paint outside in Wollongong?

Spring and autumn give the most reliable dry spells. Wollongong’s wettest month is February and its driest is September, so late winter into spring is often a good window. We check surface moisture before painting at any time of year.

Do you paint roofs and commercial buildings in Wollongong?

Yes. We do roof painting and spraying, commercial painting for offices, shops and strata buildings, interior and exterior painting, decorating and wallpaper, and colour consultation. Call 0434 432 267 for a free quote.
